What is a Managed Intelligence Provider (MIP)?

Managed Intelligence Provider (MIP) is a relatively new term in the IT Managed Service Provider (MSP) space. IT describes MSPs that have added data management services to their practice, usually with AI-enabled processes. Don’t worry, this doesn’t mean the MSP model is going away. However, forward thinking MSPs (like Telcion!) are adding a MIP component to their business model to better serve customers in a world with increasingly complicated data management practices.

What does MIP mean in practical terms?

MIP is about helping clients manage, protect, and extract useful information from their data. As an organization grows in operational maturity, new applications deploy to help with processes, organize workflows, and manage transactions with customers and vendors.

The sales department gets CRM and quoting tools. The accounting department gets more sophisticated accounting software. The operations group has tools for managing customer projects and tasks. The whole company has email and messaging systems. Everyone is creating files, notes, and transcriptions for meetings. All this data is a treasure trove of information. But how do you really unlock the full value of this data? That’s what an MIP does.

The steps to take:

First, you need to know where all your data is. Next, you need to make sure it’s protected – that it can’t be hacked, stolen, encrypted, or lost. Lastly, acquire tools enabling you to extract vital information and help people make timely decisions.

Typically, what confronts small and medium sized businesses is the lack of funds and talent that can create this kind of team and capability. Enter the MIP.

The MIP identifies all your data, ensures it’s protected, and creates cross-functional access to this data between all the systems so that new tools can be deployed. These new tools, often AI based, can access data from all the systems and locations, analyze it, and start providing feedback to the organization.

This feedback component is available in multiple ways. Configuring an AI agent to access data and be a chat bot for any user is a good start. This enables users to ask questions, and the AI agent gives relevant answers based on your data. It will then automate tasks based on this data. Whatever processes require manual data manipulation between systems can now be automated. Different AI agents are configured to handle these tasks. Finally, automation generates dashboards based on key metrics from across all the data.

Many organizations attempt to do these things through the existing applications they have, which can have an initial impact. But there’s a problem. Each application only has the data within itself and can’t look at data from other systems. This leaves critical information in silos, limiting access and diminishing decision making power; answers are muted at best, and without organizational context.

With an MIP, you can have all your data in one place, which can create organization changing value.
